Lake Katherine & Lake Stewart

From Windsor Ridge trailhead: 19 miles RT, 4033 ft of gain, max elevation 11,802 feet

Katherine lake was rumored to be named by Robert Oppenheimer for his wife Katherine who frequented the lake on horseback. However the name existed prior and was named after a Katherine who owned Los Pinos guest ranch which still exists on the Pecos River.

A visit to Lake Katherine is worth the trip. The trail gets difficult around 11,000 feet with big boulders and switchbacks, but it is worth the climb.

Lake Katherine, October, in an early snow year.
