About Pecos

Multiple black arrows pointing to the right.

I was fortunate to visit the Pecos Wilderness throughout my childhood. While my grandparents worked on building their dream mountain cabin, my sister, cousins, and I spent many days playing games and running in the woods. We visited secret rocks, waded in the Pecos River, fished in Cowles ponds, and had lots of laughs over card games. The views of Santa Fe Baldy and the Pecos Canyon were imprinted on my mind. I was fortunate that my parents bought this land in 1972, and I never let it go, even though my life in Oregon demanded my attention elsewhere for many years.

As a lifelong trail runner, I am always studying maps and looking for new paths to explore.  When I realized the land was in a prime location at the center of the Pecos Wilderness, I bought a yurt and coerced some adventurous friends to come with me to check it out. My friend Jerry loved it so much that he volunteered to help me build a camp. If you come out, you may get to meet Jerry, who is an artist, silversmith, jewelry designer, builder, and outdoorsman, and he may even have his mobile jewelry studio in tow for you to design a piece centered around a special rock you find on a trail.

I envision this camp as a base for trail runners or hikers to relax after a long day on the trails. But it is not a luxury hotel. It has essentials like a hot shower, flush toilet, and shelter from rain, but overall, it is still a camp at the mercy of the mountain weather, which you will enjoy from your tent, yurt, or van. In addition to warm sunshine and blue skies, there are monsoons with lightning storms and occasionally snow in October. But if watching sunrises, cooking over a fire, stargazing, sitting in a wood-fired sauna tent in the rain, and breathing crisp mountain air at 8500 feet is for you, then you will leave feeling rejuvenated.

I hope to connect with the mountain-loving community and maybe even share a few trails. Feel free to contact me if you are a group of runners and wish to schedule a high-altitude training block, or if you are training for a specific race.  I may be available to host during the summer and fall, as I will use any excuse I can to return.

Happy trails,
