South Truchas Summit
From Jack’s Creek: 23 miles RT, 5512 ft of gain, max elevation 13,100 ft.
Summiting South Truchas is well worth the effort. The more you climb the better it gets. Start at Jack’s Creek trailhead and wind up through Aspen and Pine forests. The trail passes through open meadows, (some cows) along Jack’s Creek, through a burn section to the Skyline trail at Pecos Baldy lake. Take Skyline across the very scenic trail rider’s wall where the big horn sheep hang out, and then take the less worn path to Truchas. Summiting requires 2+ class boulder scrambling so you should be comfortable maneuvering around boulders and rocks and avoiding cliffs. The boulders can mask the summit and the most direct route may be choose your own adventure, so GPS navigation comes in very handy. South Truchas is the second highest peak in New Mexico.
